Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) characterization and contact angle measurement of low energy hydrogen ion shower (LEHIS) treated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) materials

Abstract

The chemical and physical changes after treatment of polyethylene tereph-thalate (PET) samples from low energy hydrogen ion shower (LEHIS) produced from the gas discharge ion source (GDIS) were investigated using contact angle measurements and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Discharge current and treatment times were varied to see their effects on the PET samples. All LEHIS-treated samples achieved higher contact angles relative to the untreated PET. The FTIR spectra of the samples indicated that there are no significant chemical changes that occurred in the plasma treatment of the samples. Physical changes may be attributed through further characterization techniques like the SEM, AFM, and other physical characterizations.
