Abstract

Numerical experiments of a single particle of mass m sliding along a 1-D oscillating floor were done for different oscillating amplitude A and kinetic friction coefficients μk (constant angular frequency). For the unbounded case (no wall), the steady-state trajectory of the particle is influenced greatly by A-values, more than μk. We also observed that there is a transition point from when friction is more influential than the amplitude and vice-versa within the region of the amplitude values between 0.09 → 0.10. These observations have consequences in how we handle granular systems in industry and in the design of moving mechanical parts.
