Photocatalytic activity of graphite/zinc oxide composites synthesized via room-temperature solid-state reaction

Abstract

Graphite/zinc oxide composites synthesized via room-temperature solid-state reaction were used as photocatalyst for degradation of methylene blue dye under UV irradiation. Decomposition of methylene blue fitted a pseudo-first-order kinetics model. All composites showed enhanced photocatalytic performance compared to zinc oxide. Specifically, the sample with equal mass ratio of graphite and zinc oxide that was not ground and the sample with mass ratio of G:ZnO=1:3 ground for 2 hours increased by 87.76% and 82.76%, respectively, with respect to pure ZnO. The sample with equal mass ratio of graphite and zinc oxide ground for 2 hours also displayed good stability and recyclability, degrading methylene blue solution in at most 60 minutes after four times reuse.
