VISSER: Putting modern science labs in every school and college

Abstract

The Versatile Instrumentation System for Science Education and Research (VISSER) project is a collaborative program that aims to address the critical need for science laboratories in the Philippines. We report on the progress of designing and developing at least 100 homegrown experimental learning activities based on a handheld microcontroller-based universal platform. These modules are currently being piloted in-class in the subject areas of physics, chemistry, biology, environmental science and engineering. The project, funded both by the Department of Science and Technology and the UP Office of Vice President for Academic Affairs Emerging Interdisciplinary Research program, fully integrate both hardware and software in the experiments and is supplemented by well-written, highly descriptive manuals. The learning modules aim to be inexpensive and cost less than 1/10th of existing commercial products. It uses both generic and custom probes that can be adapted for different applications. Handheld modules are designed to be compact and can be used without a computer.
