Pearcey beam as diffraction from a parabolic slit

Abstract

Pearcey beams, exhibiting cusp-caustic diffractions, offer a unique set of traits such as auto-focusing, self-healing and form invariance. In this study, we have numerically shown the production of Pearcey beams from parabolic slits. We have also shown the effects of varying the parabolic slit’s width and degree of openness on the produced Pearcey beam. Results show a negative correlation between the slit size and the diffraction size and FWHM of the Pearcey beam. We have also found that there is an inverse relation between the steepness of the Pearcey beam’s cusp and the coefficient of parabola of the slit.
