Abstract

The collapse of the North Sea cod has been attributed to three dominant factors: fishing, rising temperature, and depensation/allee effect. We decoupled the impacts of fishing and temperature on the North Sea cod population dynamics. We showed that the decline of the cod population was mainly due to fishing. However, warming in the North Sea will strongly influence the cod population trajectory in the coming years.
