Analysis of avalanche dynamics using color-coded layers of grains

Abstract

We utilize color-coded layers of mono-disperse granular step and analyzed the resulting spread and distance distribution of runout after its collapse. We find out that most of the particles at the top-most portion of the granular step collapses straightforwardly while those at the bottom contributed to the sideways runout. Our result is consistent with the previous theoretical and statistical analyses where runout distances are found to be governed by the extreme value distribution. Our results confirm that the nature of the runout base significantly affects the resulting dynamics of the flow. The flow is affected by the sideway motion of the particles coming from the bottom of the heap, and the lateral spread of the particles
are more apparent for a base with significantly high coefficient of restitution.
