Abstract

Plasma treatment of monomers is a method of initiating polymerization and producing films with different surface characteristics. The atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) treatment is a quick and convenient method in treating monomers. The plasma treatment of methyl methacrylate and styrene under the APPJ was studied with varying discharge parameters. Methyl methacrylate was subjected under plasma treatment under the APPJ and produced white powders with enhanced hydrophilicity. Bulk treated styrene produced hydrophobic coatings with nitrogen plasma. Drop-treated and spray treated styrene did not show a drastic change in wettability but did produce films with different surface characteristics.
