Thematic trends in worldwide news reporting in the English language
Examining the trends in the news topics being reported gives insights about about the perception of global events in a country. Through a database of worldwide news articles from the GDELT Project, this paper analyzes the worldwide coverage of international news. A weighted bipartite network was generated between countries and news themes, wherein the weight is proportional to the time gap between the first publication and subsequent news reporting. It was determined that news topics with militaristic themes tend to be reported quicker among all countries. Additionally, countries that contribute an important role internationally, tend to report a wide array of topics that concern other countries. Results in this study is correlated to the salience of a country towards particular news themes.
