Synthesis and characterization of hydrothermally grown ZnO:Fe microrods

Abstract

ZnO is promising material for the production of opto-electronic devices due to its wide direct band gap and high exciton binding energy. Addition of transition metals such as Fe offers a way to tune the intrinsic properties of ZnO to fit different applications such as optical sources, sensors and photoconductors. In this study, ZnO:Fe microrods were fabricted using low temperature hydrothermal method. The effect of Fe addition in the morphology, crystal structure and optical properties of ZnO were investigated. SEM images of the pure and ZnO:Fe microstructures show rod-like morphology. However, microrods with rough surfaces was seen with increasing Fe concentration. All peaks in the XRD spectra is indexed to the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO. No impurity peaks and secondary phases were observed. No peak shift was also seen. Photoluminescence spectra of the samples showed the increase in the broad green emission with increasing Fe concentration, which suggest the incorporation of Fe in the ZnO lattice. However, further characterization is still need to confirm the incorporation of Fe in the ZnO lattice. Fe addition therefore only affects the morphology and emissions of ZnO.
