Abstract

Research in organic-inorganic hybrid compounds is motivated by the desire to design novel multifunctional materials with tunable properties. A new organic-based Fe(II)chloride, (NH₃-(CH₂)₃-NH₃)₂FeCl₆·2(H₃O-Cl), was synthesized and characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction, FTIR, magnetic susceptibility and UV-Vis measurements. Compound (1) forms a monoclinic cell, space group C2/c (No. 15), a =19.400(2)Å, b =7.2310(7)Å, c =17.795(2)Å, and β =121.116(2)°. Its crystal structure features nominal layers formed, through hydrogen bonding, from [Fe⁽ᴵᴵ⁾Cl₆]⁴⁻ and H₃O-Cl units. The layers are interleaved by propyl-diammonium cations. The title compound is a semiconductor, with a Eg=2.30eV, and a Curie-Weiss paramagnet ( μ=5.02), consistent with having high-spin (d⁶) Fe(II) ions.
