Pedagogy for scientific research: New vistas with SHS 11-12

Abstract

With the aim of contributing much needed numbers to Philippine scientific output, especially that which impacts intellectual and socio-economic domains of interest of the populace, we have defined research thrusts appropriate for grades 11-12 of senior high school (SHS) that have a high chance of spawning publishable original work. In this talk, we shall present the underpinnings of such strategic research development plan and detail some areas covered in the list. To demonstrate feasibility, we show some preliminary work done in marine biophysics research, an area chosen since: (1) the Philippines is among marine biodiversity hotspots, (2) an estimated 70% of marine life remain undocumented and lacks systematic study, and (3) skill sets required for technology-aided taxonomic identification and theoretical biophysical analysis can be designed to be appropriate for SHS. We shall also describe how academic and attitudinal preparation of SHS students is carried out through the method of the Central Visayan Institute Foundation (CVIF) Dynamic Learning Program (DLP)*. For the benefit of science educators in the conference, we will discuss the design and presentation of sample CVIF DLP learning activity sheets in SHS 11-12 physics, chemistry and mathematics, inasmuch as novel pedagogical principles are invoked in the CVIF DLP approach for enhanced learning of these subjects whether or not there are sufficient qualified teachers and material resources.

Maria Victoria Carpio-Bernido, physicist and educator, obtained her PhD (Physics) and M.S. (Physics) from the State University of New York, Albany, USA, where she was Most Outstanding Physics Teaching Assistant in 1985. She graduated B.S. Physics from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1982, a National Science Development Board scholar. At UP Diliman, she received the Chancellor’s Award for Most Outstanding Faculty Members and Achievement Award (Physics) from the National Research Council of the Philippines. She was Associate Member of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (Italy), Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung postdoctoral research fellow (Germany), Exchange Scientist in Japan, and has given plenary lectures and presented papers in international conferences, and has international publications on Feynman integrals, quantum mechanics, and stochastic analysis. In 1992, she co-founded with Dr. Christopher Bernido, the Research Center for Theoretical Physics, Central Visayan Institute Foundation (CVIF) in Jagna, Bohol, co-organized international physics workshops, given lectures and advised graduate students from UP, Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology, and University of San Carlos in Cebu. In 1999, she helped manage the CVIF high school. In 2002, she took professional education courses at Ateneo de Naga University (AdeNU), ranked second in the National Licensure Examination for Teachers, and implemented the CVIF Dynamic Learning Program to boost performance in spite of inadequate resources. In 2008, she co-produced materials for the Learning Physics as One Nation Project (Fund for Assistance to Private Education), used in over 600 schools. She and her husband received the 2010 Ramon Magsaysay Award and 2009 Gawad Haydee Yorac (UP-Meralco), and were conferred Doctor of Humanities, and Doctor of Pedagogy, honoris causa, by Holy Angel University, Angeles City, and AdeNU, respectively.
