RuO2 formation on electrodeposited black ruthenium at acidic and alkaline conditions

Abstract

Black ruthenium was electrodeposited on gold-plated silver substrates. Results show that plating at 0.090A for 5 mins at 65oC yields a smooth, even, and well-adherent Ru deposit. Electrodes produced with these parameters were anodized in 0.50M H2SO4 and 0.50M KOH at varying anodization voltages (1.5V, 2V,2.5V and 3V) and varying anodization times (1min, 2mins, 3 mins and 30 mins). Anodization results show than Ru is stable in H2SO4 at potentials below or equal to 1.5V and heavily corrodes at potentials higher. At 3V almost complete removal of Ru deposit was observed after just 3 mins. In KOH, Ru dissolves at 1.5V which means Ru is more stable in acidic than in alkaline environment. Moreover, the surface morphology of Ru anodized in H2SO4 is smooth as opposed to that in KOH which has increased porosity and presence of voids. Hence, although XRD confirmed the presence of RuO2 after anodization in both media, anodization in H2SOis preferred due to heavy dissolution of Ru in KOH.
