Netbook-based distortion product otoacoustic emission detector

Abstract

The capability of a netbook and a low-cost microphone and speaker in picking up signals in the ear canal was investigated. A probe made from off-the-shelf microphone and speaker encased in polymer clay was used to play and record signals in the ear canal using a dual-tone frequency as the auditory stimulator. The frequencies used are 1300 and 1600 Hz. Results show that distortion products (DP) are observed and that there are differences in the waveforms of the three subjects at different DP frequencies.
