Depth analysis of diacritical marks in the Baybayin stones of Ticao, Masbate

Abstract

We demonstrate a technique to characterize the depth and width of graving marks in the Ticao Stone from the 3D image of a graving and its outline. We use a descriptor P/σ which is the ratio of the peak P of the Gaussian curve fitted on graving depth profile, and its standard deviation, σ. The technique is insensitive to the accuracy of the graving outline estimate provided that there are sufficient number of points along the profile. We employ this method to examine the ambiguity of diacritical marks in some symbols of the Ticao Stone.
