Abstract

This research tests the impact resistance of auxetic foam samples. Impact testing is done by measuring impact energy absorbed and studying the stress vs. strain behavior of foams on impact. Auxetic transformation of foams is done at constant compression varying treatment time to found optimal temperature of 160°C, which allowed six transformation times believed to cause right rate of transformation. Impact energy absorbed of untransformed foam is 0.98mJ/cm3 while maximum impact energy absorbed of 1.05 mJ/cm3 (7.14% increase) had been observed for optimal treatment time of 16 minutes. Stress versus Strain plots taken during impact showed higher plateau stress as treatment time approaches 16 minutes.
