Growth of yeast cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) exposed to 405.0 nm and 543.5 nm light

Abstract

We present the effects of exposing yeast cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) to visible light (λ = 405.0 nm, 543.5 nm). Results show that the cells’ growth rate decrease for low irradiance (≤ 1.0 W/m2) of the 405.0 nm laser, with the cell area decreasing towards the end of the observation time. For the 543.5 nm laser, low irradiance values do not show a noticeable effect on the growth rate but growth inhibition is evident for irradiance ≥ 1.0 W/m2.
