Copper oxide nanowires as photocatalyst in the degradation of methylene blue organic dye

Abstract

Copper oxide nanowires were grown via direct thermal oxidation. The nanowire lengths and density were varied by oxidizing the copper foil in different time intervals (10, 30 and 60 minutes) at temperature of 450 ◦C. The grown samples were then used as a photocatalyst in degrading the methylene blue solution. Using UV-vis spectrophotometry, the absorbance of methylene blue was determined and its concentration after degradation was calculated. The effect of varying oxidation time to the ability of the copper oxide nanowires to degrade methylene blue was also investigated.
