Abstract

We analyze the dynamics of the laser-output wavelength (longitudinal modes) in the optical feedback semiconductor laser Michelson interferometer (OSMI) and explain the origin of the asymmetry that is displayed by the OSMI interferogram [Appl. Opt. 40, 506 (2001)].  Unlike its conventional counterpart, the OSMI is capable of measuring the full displacement (magnitude and direction) of the moving sample mirror.  The direction of motion relative to the laser output facet is ascertained from the symmetry characteristics of the interferogram.
